I cannot find out what my port address is

Try out the PARPORT.EXE program first. You can download it from this website.

The parallel port has one big problem when it comes to reading from it: there are a lot of different hardware setups (IBM compatible, AT type, PS/2, EPP, ECP, SPP, etc.), because this port got upgraded many times in the last 10 years. The easiest is an old PC. As a computer gets newer, there are more parallel port setups to choose from in your BIOS. With several of these setups, your timing hardware will not work!

Laptops are an even more complex story: these often also have setting for connecting drives to the printer port (mostly called 'FDD' setting). Do not select this setting.
Check your BIOS and try to find "parallel port setup" or something like that. Select another port type of port setup and try PARPORT.EXE again.
Best to try (in this order): IBM compatible, SPP, EPP or ECP.
